Beach Camping in Baja
on the
Sea of Cortez
Come join us for a great trip South of the Border! We are going just beyond San Felipe and camping at the beach on the Sea of Cortez.
This is a primitive, dry camping area. It is motor home friendly. Bring all the Toys! The camping area is about 40 miles south of San Felipe along the road to Puertecitos.
Be sure to get Mexican car insurance for all vehicles before crossing the US/Mexican border. Bring identification for the crossing back into the USA such as a valid driver's license or better yet a valid passport.
*** Do Not bring any kind of firearm or ammo
into Mexico ***

From Orange county or the L.A. area:
South on the I-5 freeway towards San Diego
Transfer to the I-805 going south
Transition into the US-8 going east towards El Centro/Calexico
(Pass Route 111 and exit onto Truck Route 7 heading south.)
(Route 7
will take you to the border. This is the commercial crossing into Mexicali.
Route
111 is the main crossing, but it is very
busy and not recommended.)
When you reach the border, stay in the right hand lane and follow the signs for AUTOS. This will take you up onto a bridge, turn right at the top of the bridge. This will take you to the border.
Once through the border crossing you will come to a "T" intersection. Make a right turn 50 feet before the "T".
After veering right, watch for traffic and proceed west along the border boundary and turn left at the Second Stop Sign.
This will put you on MORIN Blvd.
Follow Morin Blvd. through seven (7) traffic lights. (You will pass the Sony plant on the right at the 7th light.)
Immediately after crossing over a set of Rail Road tracks, turn left at the eighth light which is Highway 5 going south. (One block after turning left onto Highway 5, you will see a Costco on the left side of the road. Costco is your landmark on your return trip to the border.)
Stay on Highway 5 until you reach San Felipe. San Felipe is at kilometer marker 190 and is about 2 to 2 1/2 hours driving time from the border.
(Once you leave Mexicali, the next gas station is 120 miles away.) The road to San Felipe is a two lane road, drive carefully and watch for pot holes.
Thirty miles outside of San Felipe is a military inspection station. Smile and be courteous, it is nothing to be worried about.
Getting though San Felipe and to the Camping Area:
Go past the Arches as you enter San Felipe. Follow the signs to the Airport and Puertecitos.
After you go around the Arches, travel about 3/4 of a mile. You will enter a traffic circle, go half way around and turn right at the Airopuerto (airport) sign.
Continue to follow the signs to both the Airopuerto and Puertecitos. Note: the next Pemex gas station you see on your right is the last gas station you will see.

After traveling about five miles past the last Pemex gas station, you will see a big pink castle gate landmark on the left side of the road.
The road will then take a sharp curve to the right and about a quarter mile later you will see a sign for the Airopuerto pointing straight and below Casa Del Mar, La Hacienda & Las Casitas Resort pointing left. You must turn left at this sign. This is the Road to Puertecitos and the Beach Camp. (If you end up at the airport, you forgot to turn.)
Immediately after turning onto the Puertecitos road, reset your odometer to Zero.

You will travel exactly 38.6 miles or 62.1 km from this point to the camp turn-off. Keep an eye out for "Dips" in the road. They are vicious to the undercarriage of your car or motor home.
Watch the kilometer markers along the side of the road, when you reach km 61, start looking for a White Rock with a big Red Dot. This is the landmark. Turn left at the Red Rock. This dirt road will take you to the camping area. It is about 1.5 miles and will end at the camp.

When you see a small white structure and the Sea of Cortez . . . You have made it!!!
